Papers, 1763-1923.

Collection documents the lives of men and women in the Jewish mercantile families of Hays, Myers, and Mordecai as they spread from Boston and New York to Virginia and North Carolina. Topics addressed include Judaism, trans-Atlantic trade in the early republic, and the education of women in the 19th-century South. Included are an account book, 1763-1766, kept by Judah Hays and his son Moses Michael Hays in New York City; the papers of Samuel Myers, a merchant in Norfolk and Richmond, Va.; and various family papers related to the Hays, Myers, and Mordecai families. Jacob Mordecai founded a non-sectarian boarding school for girls in 1810 in Warrenton, N.C., in which his children taught. The collection contains the diary, 1816-1820, of Rachael (Mordecai) Lazarus documenting her younger sister's education; Eliza Kennon (Mordecai) Myers's student notebooks, ca. 1825; and an account book, ca. 1828-1829, kept by Caroline (Mordecai) Plunkett that lists parents' expenses for educating their daughters, as well as including poetry, stories, and memoirs attributed to various Myers and Mordecai women and an incomplete manuscript of Records of the Myers, Hays and Mordecai Families from 1707 to 1913 (1913) by Caroline (Myers) Cohen. There is also correspondence of Eliza Kennon (Mordecai) Myers with her sisters and other family members.
